With its much more accessibly rhythmic construction, Glimmer runs a very
different program than the occult abstractions of 2021's Protenomaly or 2017's
Usphutorontus Deius Nissesubla, both released as intimately handmade cassettes by Aubjects.
As with Directives' prior two releases, in the 8 tracks of 'Glimmer' there is a core source material of lo-fi cassette-recorded guitar improvisations, cassettes and reels from personal archives and iPhone recordings purposefully captured in significant places and moments. These intimate audio elements were manipulated, sampled and placed within compositions to add structure, texture and depth. Instruments including zither and misc. percussion were live-tracked in a few places and a few interjections of software instruments were made, but the album was built mainly from original home-recorded audio sources exclusively inside software.
Directives' D. Petri illustrates his personal sound-source approach this way:
"I've helped out a handful of times on a certain Earthship build where the person building the structure has invited visitors and those contributing to the labor to write notes, prayers, etc. on slips of paper and bury them inside the tire wall as the work proceeds. I suspect there are other types of personally significant items buried in the structure as well. Though invisible, these meaningful objects, thoughts, feelings and wishes are invested in the structure as it is slowly realized over several years, contributing to the depth of significance held in the building and property. This is the same way I think about building any creative project."
The songlike composition mode of these pieces stems from Petri's long time love of remarkable explorers in electronic music including but not limited to Severed Heads / Tom Ellard, Haruomi Hosono / YMO, and misc releases from Mille Plateaux & Raster. Apart from these and other “IDM” and / or “bedroom producer” type material influences, the sound is still overtly dreamy, psychedelic and flavored with dashes of industrial / cassette culture aesthetics, 80s/90s psych / "shoegaze" and noise, centered around manipulated guitar sounds.
As with Petri’s prior recordings as Directives and with Dog Hallucination, the tone of these pieces is introspective and emotional. The many sounds, textures and tonalities invite the listener to look inward to seek inspiration, comfort and healing. Sounds and subtle themes circle back upon themselves in various places throughout the album, forming a Labyrinth of personal memory-meaning.
The long-gestated lovingly crafted complexity of the audio and the physical elements of this work warmly suggest that with sustained commitment one can persevere and heal through many obstacles, finding something more beautiful and satisfying -something akin to a true home- both outside and within oneself.

Directives deals heavily with guitars, often lo-fi cassette recorded & put through / alongside digital manipulation & misc.
analog equipment. Field recordings, other sounds & instruments are sometimes also at play. D. Petri also operates the Aubjects label & worked similarly with guitars, manipulations & mixing in the duo Dog Hallucination & the quartet Amalgamated....more
A unique take on Indian classical sitar work. Infused at times with subtle subversions / elaborations of the form via rhythmic, melodic or production trickery. Directives
A standout in D. Petri's Dog Hallucination collab project. An audio-eulogy EP of introspective, dreamy, psychedelic pieces centered -as usual- on experimental guitar work. Directives
